Ralf rangnick is a German football manager and former player who is currently the head coach of Manchester united
He has also been in charge of clubs such as Hoffenheim, Schalke 04, and RB Leipzig. Rangnick began his coaching career in 2001 with VfB Stuttgart’s reserve team. He then went on to manage SSV Ulm 1846, TSG Hoffenheim, and Red Bull Salzburg before taking over as head coach of RB Leipzig in 2015.
In May 2018, it was announced that Rangnick would become the new manager of Manchester United following the departure of José Mourinho, however, it was announced that Rangnick would take over as manager of Schalke 04, taking die Königsblauen to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga.
He is known for his philosophy on how to play football and has said: “For us, it’s been the Holy Grail to develop a playing style so the whole team is involved in working towards getting the ball forward.” In April 2018 he was named Coach of the Year by World Soccer Magazine.
Ralf rang nick began his coaching career with Stuttgart II in 2001 after hanging up his boots following an injury that ended his playing days at VfB Stuttgart. A poor run of form saw Stuttgart plummet down to 15th on Christmas he later withdrew from the role. In September 2018, rang nick revealed in his autobiography that he had suffered from depression during this period.
Rangnick was assigned to SSV Ulm 1846 in May 2002 after being recommended by former Stuttgart coach Rolf Fringer, who later became Rangnick’s father-in-law.
He immediately steadied the ship with a 9th place finish in Regionalliga Süd and then led them to promotion into 2. Bundesliga after defeating FC Augsburg in a playoff where they overcame a 3–0 deficit from the first leg by winning 6–0 at home on 14 May 2003, becoming only the second side in history to achieve such a feat. rangnick left Ulm 1846 by mutual consent on 21 February 2004 due to differences in opinion with club president Harald Neuendorf.
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim appointed rangnick as its new head coach on 23 February 2004, where he initially took charge of the reserves team before being promoted to first-team duties in 2005. He guided them into Regionalliga Süd for their debut season in professional football and then took them up to 2. Bundesliga was remarkable considering they were only promoted the previous year after winning a playoff against FC Homburg.
Rangnick led Hoffenheim to back-to-back promotions by taking them up to Bundesliga after finishing 2nd in the 2008–09 season. Under Ralf’s guidance, Hoffenheim survived three seasons at the top level until May 2011.
On 8 May 2011, RB Leipzig announced that Rangnick would be taking over as their new head coach starting on 1 July 2011. After a successful first season in which they finished runners-up in the Regionalliga Nordost, RB Leipzig was promoted to 2. Bundesliga.
Rangnick led RB Leipzig to consecutive promotions, taking them up to Bundesliga after finishing 2nd in the 2016–17 season. They also reached the DFB-Pokal final during his tenure, losing 3–0 to Eintracht Frankfurt.
